Hikvision Cameras and Recent Government Directive
UPDATE July 7, 2025
The Canadian Government recently ordered Hikvision Canada to shut down operations, citing national security concerns. In response, Hikvision has challenged the decision in court and has officially requested a judicial review. As part of this process, Hikvision has asked the court to pause the shutdown order while things get sorted out. For now, following an agreement with the Attorney General of Canada, Hikvision is allowed to continue operating in Canada while the court looks into the case.
Hikvision has said: “We’ve always followed Canadian laws and regulations, and we don’t believe our products pose a national security risk to Canada or anywhere else.” At Thorn Security, we’re keeping a close eye on the situation.. Many local homes and businesses rely on them for their balance of quality, security, and value. As the legal process plays out, we’ll continue to support products where appropriate—alongside other trusted options, including systems that meet more specialized government or high-security needs. We’re also watching to see how this decision may (or may not) affect everyday users, like homeowners or small business owners. We’ll keep you updated as things develop.

At Thorn Security Ltd. the safety, security, and trust of our clients and partners remain our highest priority.
In light of the recent Government of Canada directive regarding Hikvision — specifically the order for the company to cease operations in Canada due to national security concerns — we want to address any potential concerns surrounding previously installed surveillance equipment.
Key points we would like to clarify:
- Compliance and Transparency: All Hikvision cameras installed by our company were sourced and deployed in full compliance with Canadian regulations in place at the time of purchase and installation.
- No Remote Access or Monitoring: As a matter of policy, Thorn Security does not provide or enable remote monitoring through foreign-based servers.
- Security Assessments and Options: We are actively reviewing the government’s findings and are preparing to assist any clients who currently use Hikvision hardware and would like an assessment, upgrade options, or removal services.
- Client Communication: Over the coming weeks, we will be reaching out to clients who may be impacted by this decision to offer personalized solutions and ensure their systems meet current and future regulatory standards.
We understand the concerns this news may raise and are committed to helping our clients navigate this transition with clarity and professionalism. If you have questions or would like a system review, please contact us directly at 250-472-6443 or Info@ThornSecurity.ca
We will continue to monitor the situation closely and uphold the highest standards in system integrity, cybersecurity, and customer service.
