Home Security Should Never Start with a Knock at the Door.

BC Laws: The Big Change for BC Homeowners

For years, homeowners across Southern Vancouver Island – from the busy streets of Victoria to the quiet reaches of the Gulf Islands – have been targeted by unsolicited salespeople. We’ve all seen it: the “limited-time” offer, the aggressive pitch, and the high-pressure tactics used to push home security systems right on your doorstep.

As a local security advocate, I am pleased to share that the rules of the game have officially changed. As of August 1, 2026, new provincial consumer protection laws have come into effect to shield you from these predatory sales models. At Thorn Security, we’ve always believed that real safety is built on a foundation of trust and professional consultation, not a 15-minute pitch on your porch. These new rules ensure you have the power to make decisions for your home on your own timeline.

Understanding the Ban: What’s Prohibited?

Consumer Protection BC has implemented a strict ban on the unsolicited door-to-door “direct sale” of specific household products and services. If someone knocks on your door uninvited to sell you these items, they are breaking the law. Prohibited products and services include:

  • Home security systems (including all related services and parts)
  • Furnaces, heat pumps, and air conditioners
  • Duct cleaning services
  • Water heaters and water treatment devices
  • Solar panel systems
  • Energy or window audits

Why the Law Stepped In: The Problem with Pressure

Security is a serious investment. It requires a professional assessment of your property’s layout and your family’s specific needs. High-pressure sales deprive you of the chance to do your due diligence.

Know Your Rights: If a prohibited door-to-door sale occurs, the contract is NOT binding on you. Furthermore, any related credit agreement arranged by the seller is also not binding.  For any direct sale (door-to-door), the business is legally required to provide you with a full copy of the contract at the very moment it is entered into. Do not accept a promise of a “mailed copy” or an email follow-up days later.

Licensing and Legitimacy: The Professional Standard

Legitimate security work in British Columbia requires specialized training and provincial certification. As a consumer advocate, I urge you to be demanding of anyone you consider hiring. Insist on seeing a physical security license and never sign a contract on the spot.

Use this checklist to evaluate any provider:

  • Business Identity: Is the legal name on the contract identical to the name of the company you think you are hiring?
  • BBB Accreditation: Do they have a proven track record? Thorn Security maintains an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.
  • Local Accountability: Do they have a physical office in our neck of the woods (like our North Saanich location) to provide same-day service and tech support?
  • No-Pressure Assessments: Do they offer a free, honest assessment and give you the space to think it over before committing?

The Thorn Security Approach: Built on Community Trust

Since 1996, Thorn Security has operated differently. We are your neighbors, and we believe our reputation in the community should be the only “sales pitch” you need.

  • Local Expertise: We are a family-owned business serving Greater Victoria, Southern Vancouver Island, and the Gulf Islands. We don’t just “sell systems” – we protect the communities where we live.
  • Property Awareness: We specialize in “Real Security” solutions, including the popular Floodlight Security Cameras. These aren’t just alarms; they provide active property awareness to help prevent crime before it happens.
  • Professional Integration: From comprehensive wired systems to flexible wireless setups, 24/7 monitoring, and home automation, we ensure your tech stays connected and reliable without the headache of DIY configuration.

Your Security, Your Choice

The best security system isn’t the one pushed on you by a stranger on your porch; it’s the one you choose after careful consideration and a professional consultation. These new BC laws are designed to put the power back where it belongs: in your hands.

Your home is your sanctuary. Don’t let a high-pressure sales pitch compromise your peace of mind. If you are ready to explore professional, licensed security solutions on your own terms, we are here to help.
